Dedicated service supports individuals experiencing gambling related harms

The East Midlands Gambling Harms Service has been in operation since June 2023. The service supports individuals aged 18 or over who are experiencing or have recently experienced gambling related harm. The service is commissioned to accept between 320 and 450 referrals per year. Referrals to the service can either be through self-referrals or professional referrals using the simple online referral forms. The service will respond to all contacts within 72 hours and there is no waiting list to access support.

All individuals are offered a comprehensive assessment which is then reviewed by the clinical team to agree the best treatment options for them. Through a combination of motivational interviewing techniques, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) interventions and other psychological therapies, the service will support individuals to reduce their gambling and work towards abstinence.
Interventions are provided through online appointments, with a particular focus on group sessions - however, 1 to 1 support can be provided where this is indicated. The service also supports face-to-face appointments at its site in Derby, should this be an individual's preference. To support greater patient choice, evening appointments have recently been introduced on Thursdays each week and provide a condensed treatment programme.
The service is keen to continue to engage with stakeholders across the region to provide awareness relating to gambling harms and how to refer to the service, and would welcome contact from anyone who is interested in this service - please email dhcft.emgamblingharms@nhs.net for further information.
